OpenAI buys the team behind the diffs in Codex

OpenAI will acquire Pierre, whose Trees and Diffs libraries already run in Codex, to rebuild Git workflows for developers and agents.

2 minMain AI HubFresh · 4 Nov

OpenAI has agreed to acquire Pierre Computer Company, the company behind Code Storage and a set of open-source developer tools. Anyone who has browsed files or reviewed a change in the Codex app has already used Pierre's work: its Trees library handles navigating a project's files, and its Diffs library shows what changed. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and until then the two companies stay separate.

The reasoning is about how Git works when much of the work is done in parallel by agents. OpenAI says the systems around Git need to evolve for that, and points to Pando, an in-house source control backend for its engineers and agents that it described earlier the same week. With Pierre's team it says it wants to cover the whole path, from the first branch an agent creates to the moment code is deployed, and to make Codex the place where developers and agents take on their largest pieces of work.

Pierre's other products show the same focus on reviewing code at volume. Diffs has an edit mode that lets a reviewer fix a line where they spot the problem, Highlights is a fast syntax highlighter that updates as a developer types or an agent streams code, and Code Storage is a service that lets applications store code and track its history using Git. OpenAI says Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source and that it will keep contributing to them, and that Code Storage customers can continue using it after closing while its features are brought into Codex.

No price was disclosed. The announcement states the longer ambition plainly: to advance source control across the industry and to have Codex connect the code a company ships with the decisions its people make.
